Balloon Rockets, Air and Propulsion

Mr. Derrick Aikerson's 1st grade class is studying Air and Weather in their AMSTI unit. The class applied what they've learned about air to balloon rockets. They learned that compressed air exerts pressure to propel a balloon rocket They also learned that a rocket is a vehicle used to launch things into space.  They set up a balloon-rocket system using fishing line, ziplock bags, straws, and balloons.  They followed these steps: 1. Tape a large zip lock bag to a jumbo straw. 2. Cut a piece of fishing line about 16 feet long. 3. Thread the fishing line through the jumbo straw. 4. Using duct tape to anchor knotted ends of the fishing line to the backs to 2 chairs at both ends of the line. 5. They set up the flight lines to fly balloon rockets. 6. The students released the balloon rockets on the fishing line flight line. Each student took turns racing their rocket balloons.

You can see some photographs on Mr. Aikerson's photo album on the school web site.
