Mrs. Jo E Alexander-Dale, teacher

Jo E. Alexander, gifted teacher at Westhills will be working with 3rd- 6th graders. She will be at Westhills Tuesdays and Wednesdays. The 1st semester, the topic of study will be Governmental Systems as a Vehicle for Change. The students will conduct a mock election on Election Day. Students will research and "become" a President.

The students will research both presidential candidates and present the information to the class. Students will create a campaign poster for a chosen candidate. They will also create a poster showing the differences in how presidents are elected and senators, representative, governors, etc. are elected.

The students will learn that the ultimate purpose of a representative democracy is to protect the rights of all people. Rules and the consequences and rewards that result in following or disobeying them, can change behavior. The actions and choices people make result in change and participation in a democratic process empowers the individual to affect change. It is important to make informed decisions so that change is positive.
