The 3rd grade science unit for the semester is Plants.
The students have observed the germination of seeds.
The next assignment is planting seeds. The students planted Wisconsin Fast Plants because they are special in many ways. This plant whizzes through its entire life cycle in just 6 weeks. These seeds will soon be used in NASA's space biology program.
It was very important for the students to follow directions carefully in order to the plants to sprout. They gathered all of their supplies. They placed a wick in each section of the planter quad. Using their forceps, they pulled the wick through the hole until the tip stuck out about 1 cm. They filled each section of the planter quad halfway with potting soil. They added 3 fertilizer pellets to each section. The fertilizer pellets were larger than the seeds. They filled each section of the quad to the top with potting soil and pressed it down with their fingers. The students put a drop of water on their tray and dipped a toothpick in it. They used the wet toothpick to pick up 1 seed. They placed the seed in the potting soil and covered it. They put 2 seeds in each section of the planter. Watering the plant very gently, they watched for water dripping from the bottom of each wick Students wrote their name and the date on the planter label and placed it in the planter.
