Mrs. Valerie Simmons, project coordinator

Mrs. Valerie Simmons, guidance counselor organized the Caring and Sharing project for December. Westhills students have been collecting items for the nursing home since after Thanksgiving. This is the 5th year Westhills students have adopted Meadow Wood Nursing Home and collected socks, peppermints, deodorant, toothpaste, and lotion for the residents. The Peer Helpers, along with Mrs. Valerie Simmons helped divide the items into 300 bags to take Dec. 12. It took about 2 days to divide all of the items and get them packed into sacks. Students also decorated each sack with holiday drawings. Fifth graders along with Mrs. Valerie Simmons, Ms. Mildred Posey, Ms. Angela Davis, Mrs. Shenita Fencher, Mrs. Ketina Lyons, Ms. Bo Floyd, and Mrs. Karen Travis took the items to the nursing home. Ms. Bo Floyd, music teacher led the students while they sang several Christmas songs. The students and teachers passed out the holiday bags to the residents in the cafeteria, rehabilitation room, and on several floors.  A special blanket handmade by Mrs. Beverly Graham was presented to one of the residents.
