Alabama School of Fine Arts

Westhills 6th graders were invited to the Alabama School of Fine Arts Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008 from 9:00 A.M.- 10:30 A.M. Mrs. Vicki Kirk, Mr. Adolphus Elliott, Ms. Mildred Posey, and Mrs. Karen Travis accompanied the students on the field trip.

The ASFA students presented 20 different physical science experiments related to matter and motion, exothermic versus endothermic reactions and a host of other fun, entertaining, educational, enlightening, and LOUD activities. Some of the experiments included Dr. Jekyll's Brew that showed chemical pH changes in solvents. Elephant's toothpaste is another science experiment that used colored solutions to explain the concept of sublimation and the vibration of gas molecules.

The other activities included Methanol canon, Endothermic reaction (freezing beaker to block of wood) Is it ever too cold to skate?; Water delivery down a string, Chinese sprouting bowl, Chemiluminescence, Exploding pumpkin, Slime, Hydrogen balloon, Memory wire, Polymers, Leaky faucet. Carbon dioxide snow balls, Snow, Shivering quarters, Magnesium glow, and Dragon's breath.

Several Westhills students were selected to participate in the experiments.

All of the activities kept the students interest and attention, especially the loud ones!

The Alabama School of Fine Arts wants students who love science and math to apply to attend during their high school years. You can check out their web site for additional information.
