Dr. Seuss' Birthday
Read Across America
March 2 is Dr. Seuss' birthday. It is also Read Across America Day. Dr. Seuss' real name was Theodor Geisel. The theme of Alabama's celebration is Grab a Hat and Read with a Cat. Lots of teachers and students will be wearing striped party hats today.
Did you know that The Cat in the Hat is celebrating its 50 birthday. The book was 1st published on March 1, 1957. Dr. Seuss wrote Cat in the Hat because some people said that children's books were boring. Dr. Seuss wanted to show he could write a book that a 1st grader would love to read. The Cat in the Hat is only 72 pages long, but Dr. Seuss said it took him 9 months to write the book. More than 7.2 million copes of The Cat in the Hat have been sold.
Westhills celebrated by teachers reading Dr. Seuss books to their classes.
Some first and second grade teachers even cooked green eggs and ham in their classroom. The students got to taste them. Some people liked them and some did not!
Ms. Taylor's 2nd grade class heard Green Eggs and Ham read 5 different ways; scary voice, happy voice, singing voice, etc. Her students also played Tic Tac Toe "Seuss" style. They also played Roll and Color the Cat's Stripes.
