The 6th Annual Bessemer /Jefferson County Leadership Council's Essay/Oratorical Contest was held at the Bessemer Civic Center Monday, February 15, 2010. Westhills' students that participated were:
Iziah Lavender, Christen Bolling, Jalen Chatman, Carlos Wilson, Jillian Jolly and Khadijah Muhammad.
The theme for the speech was: A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE: AFRO-AMERICAN HERO AND HEROINE- PAST AND PRESENT. Each student gave their speech telling who was important to them and had an impact on them and society. The speeches had to be memorized.
Iziah Lavender placed 1st in the Primary Division for Grs. K-2
Carlos Wilson placed 1st and Jillian Jolly placed 3rd in the Intermediate Division for Grs. 3-5.
We are proud of our students for participating in the contest.
Thanks to Mrs. Valerie Simmons, guidance counselor and Mrs. Susan Robertson, 3rd grade teacher for supporting the students with their attendance at the contest on Feb. 15.
