Read Across America and Dr. Seuss

 Tuesday, February 16, 2010, Westhills celebrated "Grab a Hat & Read with a Cat".  This was "Read Across America" Promotion Day.  The program began at 1:00pm in the gym. Larry Ware, 2nd grader welcomed everyone. Various students from all grade levels led the Pledge of Allegiance. Ms. Anita Gibson, AEA President explained the occasion to the students. She read the book, Hop on Pop by Dr. Seuss. The February students of the month participated in her reading by jumping on bubble wrap.  They "HOPPED ON POP!"  Mr. Al Elliott, 6th grade teacher led the Cat in the Hap Rap.  The "Read Across America"  Reader's Oath was led by various students from all grade levels. Ms. Gloria Gentry, 1st grade teacher introduced the special guests and guest readers. Ms. Mildred Posey, principal dismissed the students and guest readers to the classrooms.  The Westhills Honor Society students led the readers to the classes.  Mrs. Erika Amerson, kindergarten teacher used her cake making and decorating skills to make us a "Cat in the Hat" cake.  Thanks to Mrs. Rhonda Wesley, Mrs. Lori Morrison, and Ms. Gloria Gentry for organizing the event.  Thanks to all those who helped with the event. It took lots of people working together to make the day a success!

Our guest readers for the day were  Mrs. Linda Buckner, local author, Rev. Jeffery Bennett, Rev. Earnest Cunningham,  Mr. Michael Foster, Interim Superintendent of Bessemer City Schools, Dian Clark, Bessemer Public Librarian, Jan Johnson of the Bessemer Fire Department, Mrs. Becky Hunter, retired Westhills teacher,  Mr. Roderick Benton, Bessemer Public Librarian, Rev. Chad Jackson, Dr. Pat Garlikov, ARFI Coordinator for Bessemer City Schools, Mrs. Franchon Muhammad, Director of Instruction for Bessemer City Schools, Mrs. Bernice Kidd, retired teacher, Mr. Howard Johnson, Director of Johnson Funeral Home, Rev. Tarus Lyons, educator,  Rev. Korie Anderson, Rev. William Baylor, Sergeant Carmichael of the Bessemer  Police Department and  Dr. Donald Black, Assistant Principal of Davis Middle School.
